Gorilla : A silverback is an adult male gorilla, typically more than 12 years of age and named for the distinctive patch of silver hair on his back. A silverback gorilla has large canines that come with maturity. Black backs are sexually mature males of up to 11 years of age. Silverbacks are the strong, dominant troop leaders. Each typically leads a troop of 5 to 30 gorillas and is the center of the troop's attention, making all the decisions, mediating conflicts, determining the movements of the group, leading the others to feeding sites and taking responsibility for the safety and well-being of the troop.

Tiger : Estimations in 2005 indicate an approximate worldwide population of 4,500 Bengal Tigers: The bulk of the population of about 3000 individuals live in India. There are about 200 tigers living in both Bangladesh and Nepal, and a small, unknown number in Northwestern Myanmar. The Bengal Tiger is now strictly protected, and is the national animal of both Bangladesh and India. After the resounding success of the Tiger conservation program in India known as Project Tiger, the population of wild tigers has increased dramatically. The tiger population of India is officially estimated to have reached about 3,500, up from 1,200 in the 1970s. But since the early 1990s, the tiger population has suffered a setback due to habitat destruction and the large scale poaching of these animals for their skins and bones. The Indian government is trying hard to show the world that the tiger is thriving in India, often using controversial techniques like taking moulds of paw prints to track tiger populations. It was recently discovered that tigers were wiped out from one of Project Tiger's leading sanctuaries, Sariska, much to the embarrassment of the government. Some believe that the actual tiger population in India could be less than 2,000.

Zebra : The Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi), sometimes known as the imperial zebra, is the largest species of zebra. It is found in the wild in Kenya and Ethiopia. Compared to other zebras, it is tall, has large ears, and its stripes are narrower. The species is named after Jules Grévy, a president of France, who, in the 1880s, was given one by the government of Abyssinia. The Grevy's zebra differs from all other zebras in its primitive characteristics and different behaviour. In fact, "zebra" does not describe any specific taxon and is used only to refer to black and white striped members of the family Equidae. All members of the family are of the genus Equus, but the genus is commonly subdivided into four subgenera; Equus, Asinus, Hippotigris and Dolichohippus. The plains zebra and mountain zebra belong to Hippotigris, but the Grevy's zebra is the sole species of Dolichohippus. In many respects, it is more akin to the asses (Asinus), while the other zebras are more closely related to the horses. In certain regions of Kenya, the plains zebras and Grevy's zebras coexist.

Dry Tortugas Ft. Jefferson : Fort Jefferson and related facilities nearly cover Garden Key. The island, formed by shifting sands and coral boulders, has an area above water of about 16 acres.

After being abandoned for 24 years in the 1870's and 1880's the military returned in 1898 at the beginning of the Spanish-American War. During that war the island was used as a coaling facility. The coaling station station itself, the ruins of a portion of which are shown below, was constructed from about 1898-1904.
